This miniature musical instrument features a numbered keyboard made of metal areas you touch with the tethered stylus to generate a tone. Where you touch on the keyboard affects the pitch, allowing you to create unique versions of classic songs or write your own synth masterpiece.
You can further customize your synthesizer’s sound with an octave switcher, a vibrato switch, and a pitch-adjusting dial. Stylophone is a vintage toy synth that has been featured in works by classic artists such as Kraftwerk, David Bowie, and soon… yourself!
What exactly is the Stylophone?
Part silly toy and part pocket synthesizer, this 20-note keyboard plays electrically-generated musical notes when you touch the stylus’s metal tip to the metallic keyboard.
The sonic range can be extended with a pitch-adjusting knob on the bottom, while the volume can be adjusted with a dial on the side. If you want to throw some warble on your tunes, just flip the vibrato switch!
Whether you make your own tones or add input through the line-in jack, your sonic creation will be played through the integrated speaker. That means this is a self-contained synthesizer ready for audio experimentation.
With a retro sound and look, it’s the ideal instrument for a beginner to start tinkering around on or for a collector to round out their synthesizer set.
Do you need anything else to make it work?
The Stylophone is battery-powered, but once you’re juiced up, the tethered stylus and internal speaker provide the self-contained tools you need to make music.

The electric motor makes it easy and quick to start gyroscope, with speeds you would struggle to achieve with string pull start. The motor has its own battery pack that requires 4 AA batteries. Batteries are not included.
SUPER SMOOTH computer balanced disk
If a spinning object is unbalanced it will vibrate. A gyroscope needs to be balanced, just like a wheel on a car is balanced to ensure a smooth ride. The super gyroscope disk is made from brass and machined to microns precision, ensuring the disk is incredibly symmetrical and well balanced. Despite the brass looking perfect on the surface, it is an alloy, made up of a number of other metals and these metals are not always evenly dispersed resulting in a very slight non-uniform weight distribution. To correct this, the disk is then computer balanced to an impressive 250th of a gram accuracy! Thus giving the gyroscope a highly balanced, super smooth feel, longer spin and even quieter operation.
SUPER SUSTAINED spin times of up to 25 minutes
Carefully chosen miniature ultra-low friction stainless-steel ball bearings allow it to run smoothly and almost silently for up to 25 minutes, allowing you to perform the experiments and tricks you want to do without having to reattach the electric motor. There’s something about the John Williams themes from Star Wars that instantly take me to a happy place and recall childhood optimism and exhilaration. Since purchasing my Crossley Cruiser Mickey Mouse record player at the D23 Expo last summer, I’ve discovered my favorite way to relax from a stressful day is to sit back while a spinning record hypnotizes me, surrounding my ears with hi-fi brilliance. When I heard that Walt Disney Records would be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars with a 3-disc LP set this December, it was already on my holiday wishlist.
My built-in excitement didn’t adequately prepare me for the grandeur of this release. The box it’s housed in looks and feels like black leather, with a metal embossed logo recessed in the center that reads “Star Wars: A New Hope” and silver foil credits on the top and bottom. It’s absolutely gorgeous and worthy of display.
The book slides out from the side, containing the three records in addition to 47-pages celebrating the anniversary of this groundbreaking film. Images include concept artwork, behind-the-scenes photos, and pictures of John Williams’ life and career. There are two essays, one exploring the history and success of the original film by Jeff Bond, the other providing information on John Williams’ life and career highlights.
The original soundtrack in 1977 was a 2-LP release that featured 74-minutes of score, most of it out of order. The first two records in this collection recreate that same audio experience, but restored “at 192kHz/24-bit.” It sounds amazing and my ears have picked up on instruments and arrangements that I never noticed before on CD or digital, or in the film itself. If you’ve never listened to this music on vinyl before, then you haven’t heard all of it. Both LPs are high gloss black and more reflective than any other vinyls I own. Each of the LPs come with sleeves featuring the rebel and imperial logos, which slide into sturdy pages at the back of the book.
The third LP adds an extra wow factor with a hologram etched side that features a rotating Death Star when you spin the disc. It does contain music as well, the 12-minute track “The Last Battle” which is also on Side 4 of the release. This was my first hologram disc, although I did see a demonstration of the one previously released for The Force Awakens at the D23 Expo. It looks like the Death Star is spinning slightly above the record, while a reflection of it is deep inside. The other side of this bonus LP doesn’t have any audio content, but makes a lovely display as it features the 40th Anniversary logo etched into the vinyl. (The image doesn’t do it justice, it is spectacular in person.)
I loved celebrating 40 years of the force by experiencing the original motion picture soundtrack of Star Wars: A New Hope fully restored on vinyl in the original track order. If you’re a fan of John Williams and have never experienced this music this way, you’re in for a real treat. This is sure to become a treasure in the hands of any Star Wars collector.

Using the Hyperbolic to tell the time is a novel and mathematically satisfying experience!
The intersection of the angled arm and the numbers marked on the two hyperbolic curves indicates the hour. The curves are physical representations of part a deformed clock face (circle), having become one of an infinite number of ellipses. Some hours “disappear” in the single parabolic form when the plane lies parallel to the angle of a cone…only to reappear in the hyperbolic form “on the other side of infinity”.
The pointed hand in the centre below the ‘X’ shows the minutes – and from above can tell the time the conventional way. Instructions in the pack show just how and explain the mathematics of the clock.

The Memory Metal Heat Engine uses a loop of nitinol wire to generate power. The nitinol loop is place on two free rotating wheels, This device uses only hot water (hot side) and cool ambient air (cool side). The smaller brass wheel of the Memory Metal Heat Engine is immersed in a hot liquid.
In the Memory Metal Heat Engine the nitinol loop wire has been trained to remember a straight shape. When the loop travels into the hot water it is brought above its transition temperature and attempts to straighten out. Look at figure , at position 1 the nitinol wire is relatively straight and cool. As the wire moves from position 1 to 2, it is bent around the small brass wheel and enters the hot water. As the wire moves from position 2 to 3, the hot water brings the nitinol wire above its transition temperature and it tries to straighten out. When attempting to straighten out the nitinol wire takes a form depicted by the dotted lines. In doing so, the wire generates a tugging force, F, along the loop. As the wire segment moves from position 3 to 4 it straightens out. As the wire travels from position 4 to position 1, through the air and around the large wheel it has sufficient time to cool below its transition temperature and is ready for another cycle.
In short, the temperature differential causes one side of the loop to stiffen (hot water side) while on the air side of the loop the nitinol cools and relaxes. A mechanical force is produced that causes the wheel pulleys to rotate.
In some cases it is necessary to jump start the engine by rotating the larger wheel. Interestingly, the Memory Metal Heat Engine hasn’t a set rotational direction. Whichever way it is started it will continue to rotate. The Memory Metal Heat Engine can also be solar powered. A magnifying lens focusing sunlight on the brass wheel also supplies sufficient heat to power the engine.
Larger Memory Metal Heat Engine engines have been built and tested using nitinol loops. One engine built by Innovative Technologies International (ITI) in 1982, contained 30 nitinol wire loops. The nitinol wire used in the loops was 22 mils in diameter. The engine was tested using a hot water bath set at 55 C and an air temperature of 25 C. The engine reached a speed of 270 RPM and continued to operate for 1.5 years without failure. The nitinol wire had undergone 2.1×108 cycles without any breakage or observable degradation in performance.
Looking back into the history of mechanics once again, Ugears couldn’t miss such an important and interesting period, in a not-so-distant past, as the 50s. Rockabilly music, swing dresses, bobby socks and, of course, magnificent luxury cars and convertibles: feel a part of the time with their new ingenious work – The Dream Cabriolet VM-05.
The 50s had given automobiles a completely new look, producing absolutely unique recognizable designs. The Dream Cabriolet VM-05 is a highly detailed and extremely realistic tribute of the Ugears’ designers and engineers to the automobile industry highlights of that decade.
The model is traditionally equipped by a rubber-band motor that powers the mechanism and drives the car. The Cabriolet can go forward or back. To ensure you can take a close look at the beautiful eight-cylinder V configuration engine in operation, they introduced the idle mode. In this mode, your Cabriolet will stay still letting you look under the hood to appreciate the beauty of the moving gears. Officially licensed from Universal Studios, the NeoLev Back to the Future 1:8 Scale Hoverboard with 8” Half Pipe Base operates on the principle of magnetic repulsion. A clear acrylic base contains an anisotropic rubber magnet (aka, “track’) which creates a repulsive force against the embedded anisotropic magnets in the board allowing for levitation at a height proportional to that depicted in the movie.
The 3.25” long board (fingerboard) hovers at 0.5”! The track has a slight bend akin to a half pipe allowing the board to move forward and aft along with unique recoil characteristics when pressed down.
The bottom half is made of a curved piece of rubber magnet oriented to oppose the magnets in the hoverboard. The curvature keeps the levitating hoverboard in the middle. The clear sides allow me to see how well the opposing forces are acting.
The clear acrylic on each side is spaced perfectly to allow the hoverboard movement along he track, but not too wide as to let magnetic oposition the board flip over. I think I want to make a little foam board version of me to ride this board as it sits on my desk.

HOW UGEARS MONOWHEEL WORKS
UGears has remade this model in a skeletal version, without the armor-like outer shell, so there is easy access to the rubber bands should they be replaced. Not to mention you can see the wonderful way the mechanisms work as it rolls around! You can use Monowheel in two different ways, as it operates in two modes. One ensures the Monowheel’s smooth ride provided by a jolt of momentum, while the other one engages a halting mechanism, in case you don’t know what your monowheel to roll too far away.
Two working modes guarantee even more fun. Mode one with the feet locked will give you uninterrupted rolling straight ahead for about 1.5 – 2 meters (5.7-7.6 ft) until the rubber-band motor’s resource is completely released. After that the model gracefully turns around and stops.

The second mode with the feet in the unlocked position your Monowheel will roll ahead while the rubber-band motor is working. After that it turns around, its feet hide inside and the model keeps rolling until it runs into an obstacle. In this mode, the model can cover up to 5 meters, which inspired us to play some mechanical bowling using our new model as a bowling ball. We recommend this new sport to all our friends!

There is no single right way to set up a WaterLily – there is also no wrong way, as long as you are safely capturing fast moving water or wind. You have to be creative and think about the best way to capture the most water or wind energy in your current environment, keeping in mind that rivers can be dangerous and your personal safety should be the most important factor.
This configuration works well in rivers where you have anchor points on both sides.
This configuration works well in rivers, and could also be used to tow the unit behind a canoe or kayak.
This is a very stable configuration, but also the most work to set up. It is a good option for wind, where it can be installed between two trees.
In this configuration you can hang the WaterLily from a single point, using a weight (knapsack, rock, etc.) to keep it from swinging. You can then use the charging cable to keep it oriented in the direction of the wind.
Any time you use the WaterLily around water, you should tie off the Output Port to be sure that it (and your connected device) does not get pulled into the water.
Be careful when choosing your anchor points, and in the knots you use, especially around water. A failed knot or anchor point could mean your device is pulled into the water. We have included a diagram of secure knots as a suggestion.
After using the WaterLily in salt water, rinse it off in fresh water to help prevent salt deposits and corrosion.
If anything gets stuck inside the WaterLily (grass, string, etc.) it can be easily disassembled to clean. Just remove the four screws to remove the cover, and unscrew the nose cone to remove the rotor.
Some devices do not handle direct charging from the WaterLily when the water or wind speed is low. This will be apparent because the device will alternate between charging and not charging as the turbine speed changes. One solution to take care of this issue is to:
-Charge a power bank with the WaterLily, and then charge your device from that.
Important Safety Information
The Double Bowline (pictured) is a great choice for putting a fixed-size loop in the end of a rope. It is a secure knot that will not come undone on its own, but is also easy to untie if needed.
There are many other options for secure knots for different purposes.

Snoop Dogg has a new cookbook out and we tried out a pair of recipes.
So it’s not too much of a surprise that Snoop would come out with a cookbook called “From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen” which was released recently on Chronicle Books (which is oh so close to being on Chronic Books).
In the book, Snoop admits he’s not too adventurous when it comes to grub, so the recipes are food he grew up with or that he makes on the road that reminds him of home. They range from soul food and other American classics to Italian, sandwiches, desserts and even gin-heavy mixed drinks, with juice, of course.

The designers paid special attention to the anatomy of the animal’s legs to make sure that all the joints and movements closely resemble those of a real horse. To animate the legs the engineers implemented a claw mechanism.
The bionic heart of your horse is a pendulum installed in the chest of the mech. The oscillations of the pendulum slow the transmission of energy from the rubberband motor to the movable elements extending the working time of the mechanism.
The Bionic Horse won’t carry you over the horizon – the distance it can cover in one winding is quite limited. Although, it is enough to observe the work of the unique mechanism and enjoy the beauty of the mechanics of the model.

The concept of the rotation of the various parts (sun earth moon) of the solar system rotation is complex. This model illustrates the relationship of the three objects well and fairly accurately too. There are 10 gears made of sturdy plastic and they all rotate well enough.
The sun is orange and flimsy, the earth is nice and angled accurately and the moon is just a white sphere.

It was originally aired in the first episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus’ second season, and it features a lanky and limber Cleese executing some of the most uproarious physical comedy ever committed to film, all while maintaining a completely serious deadpan expression. At one point, the sheer volume of the studio audience’s laughter is sufficient to render Cleese’s lines completely inaudible. In his “The First 20 Years of Monty Python”, prolific Python chronicler Kim “Howard” Johnson relates Graham Chapman’s tale of the sketch’s origin:
“John Cleese and I were writing together one day, and John had been thinking of doing something about anger. He’s very good at it, and he likes that emotion very much indeed. I’d been noticing that there were all sorts of ministries for strange things that were likely to distract people from the main issues of the day and make it look like the government was doing something. A lot of attention would either go to a drought or a flood that probably didn’t exist anyway, and there seemed to be lots of useless ministries. I thought, why not a Ministry of Anger?
It’s difficult to remember whether it was John’s or my idea, but I do know that the next stage was Silly Walks, which was more ludicrous and petty than an emotion like anger. My house was on a very steep hill, and we saw a man walk past, uphill, stooped very sharply backward, defying the laws of gravity! Well, we thought Silly Walks was a good idea, but we couldn’t quite think how to develop it.
As usual, we were supposed to be writing something else when this idea occurred, anything to prevent us from getting to that work! But we thought we’d better get on to writing what we were supposed to be writing. So we rang up Mike (Palin) and Terry (Jones) to interrupt them from whatever they were supposed to be doing, and made them write the sketch.“

Customer: I’m a high school physics teacher and love science gadgets, especially if I can use them to teach something fun. Attention:
1. Only use a little graphite dry lube quiet it down nicely if there is a little noisy. You can scratch off the graphite from the pencil with a knife.
2. Prohibit to add oil to lubricate. Because the oil will mix with dust in the air to be oil-dirt. That will make the friction to be even bigger. The stirling engine can’t run freely then.

Haynes presents the project as an introduction to more complex vehicle engineering: the instruction manual’s preface delves into technical areas such as cross-plane versus flat-plane crankshafts, V-angles and cylinder firing order, and at the back is more detail on how engines work, with a glossary.
Indeed, cylinder firing order and even valve timing come into play during the building of the model, with pistons, cams, rocker arms and even an ignition system (spark plugs represented by electronically controlled LEDs) working in unison and synchronized via a timing belt and distributors. If you don’t know what any of that means, you will do by the end of the assembly, and you will have a newfound appreciation for the complexity of an internal combustion engine.

We found the instructions, like Haynes’s car manuals, clearly and concisely written, with essential diagrams illustrating each stage of the building process. We did make a couple of mistakes towards the end, however: the rocker shafts had somehow been assembled the wrong way around on one bank of cylinders, and the ignition timing was surprisingly fiddly and required some initiative to sort out. If your 10-year-old can do this, perhaps they’re destined to be the next Colin Chapman.
All in, it took 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete our model (that’s Christmas morning sorted, then). It turned over as promised, though the nature of the plastic pieces made it far from smooth when it ran — this is no Mercedes-AMG V8. Some extra time spent on fine-tuning might have helped.
Clicks and clunks aside, it is tremendously satisfying to see the product of your labors in action, and as a way of whetting young appetites for mechanical engineering, the Haynes Build Your Own V8 Engine kit certainly hits the spot.

I really like this product I have one I keep in my CAR and one in both my RV and BOAT. I use them for lighting up my area at night for working and playing. They are very bright at 2000 Lumens 12 foot in the air. The LIGHT really is nice being UP to 12 Feet (3.75m) in the air on the Telescoping Rod.

Developing its new fascinating series, Mechanical Town, Ugears presents another addition to the collection: the Rail Manipulator.
Set up in the dock of Mechanical Town not far from the Robot Factory, the Manipulator is a purely utilitarian model, which by no means makes it less entertaining than the other models in the range. Like the rest of the Ugears models, the Manipulator is designed to make sure the fun goes on after the assembly is completed. With a number of extras that come in the box, the model guarantees hours of an exciting new pastime.
Speaking of extras, with the Manipulator itself, you also receive two sections of rails, the shed under construction, two shipping crates with doors, crane, freight carriage, and five characters.
Design & engineering
The Manipulator is a mechanical claw with three levers that sits on a platform on the rails. The rails can be connected in parallel or in one line. The settings are completed with a pseudo-metal shed under construction made of giant trusses which arrived straight out of the Industrial age with one of the characters, a roofer with a hammer, sitting on a beam of the shed. The Worker holding signal flags assists the Manipulator operator to control the process, while the Worker with a shovel and the Worker with a wrench are minding their own business in the docks.
The model also includes one of the docks’ most important pieces of equipment, the Crane. It can be disassembled and put back together almost by a wave of the hand. With the supplementary mechanisms the rotation and angle of the crane can be locked even with a load.
And an important addition to the setting is the Freight carriage with drop sides. Load and unload your freight crates along with the disassembled crane easily and move them to a new destination.
All the parts of the set are made of high-quality plywood and needs no extra materials or tools to assemble.
How does it work?
The claw itself sits on a platform that can rotate manually or by a valve. The operator’s cab, equipped with a protection lid and adjustable headlight, is found in the front part of the model. The counter-clockwise rotation of the cabin switches the Manipulator’s modes:
| - Initial position (driving mode) – the claw’s rotation platform locked, the model moves along the track. |
| - 90 degree turn (free mode) – the rotation platform is unlocked. |
| - 180 degree turn (loading mode) – the wheels of the models are locked along with the gear in the front axle that connects to the ledge on the rails. |
The rear of the model carries the lever that controls lifting, lowering, and holding of four foot supports providing extra-steadiness while operating the claw.
With its articulated claw, the Ugears Manipulator can load and move the freight crates in the Carriage with an extraordinary – up to 1 cm – preciseness. Based on the original prototypes, the Manipulator will teach you about the operational and constructional peculiarities of the real-life machines, such as cranes, excavators, robotic arms, etc; their mechanics and functionality.
All in all, the Manipulator has a great capacity both as an assembly model that is exciting to put together and as a great playtime companion due to its diverse functionality. Not to forget about its educational value provided by the great mechanics based on real-life designs. And if you feel like you need to get even more fun from the model, you can always hook your Manipulator up with the other Ugears models from your collection with the coupling hitch holes.
